NEWARK, N.J. (PIX11) — The FAA temporarily stopped flights at Newark Liberty Airport on Monday when a burning smell prompted a tower evacuation.

The FAA said the evacuation occurred around 7:30 a.m. as crews investigated the source of the odor.

Flight operations were halted while controllers were moved out of the tower as a precaution.

FAA staff were relocated to a backup tower in Terminal C before operations resumed at 8:05 a.m., the Port Authority said.

The disruption came as the region’s air travel was already strained after a late Sunday crash at LaGuardia Airport that left two people dead and several others badly hurt when an Air Canada regional jet struck a fire truck on the runway while landing, officials said.

No immediate injuries were reported in connection with the Newark tower evacuation.

The agency advised travelers to monitor the FAA website for updates.
