
Key City Hall staffers did not know in advance that New York City first lady Rama Duwaji had been commissioned to do artwork that appeared alongside the work of an author who praised the October 7 attacks. A spokesperson for Mayor Zohran Mamdani declined to comment on what his administration knew beforehand about the artwork. Two people briefed on the episode, who declined to be named so as to not antagonize the mayor, argued the backlash raises questions about whether Duwaji’s work should be more closely vetted.
