PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A suspect was arrested after leading a high-speed chase in downtown Salem and crashing into an officer’s car, police said.

Salem resident Richard Wilson, 48, was arrested just after noon on Saturday and accused of several charges, including hit and run.

Salem police said they initially spotted a stolen vehicle being driven through downtown. Officers “followed it from a distance while others positioned themselves with stop sticks,” or tire deflation devices.

“The vehicle suddenly turned into a nearby parking lot at Commercial Street and Owens Street SE, pushing another vehicle out of the way before exiting onto Owens,” the Salem Police Department said in a press release. “It then turned north onto Liberty Street and drove at a high rate of speed towards downtown.”

The stolen car then struck an officer’s vehicle before it was boxed in by other police cars near Liberty Street and Mission Street SE. Wilson fled on foot but was arrested half a block away, police said.

Wilson was booked into the Marion County Jail on a parole violation warrant and faces charges that include unauthorized use of a car, felony attempt to elude police and misdemeanor hit and run.
